My wife seems to take it as a sign that she is a terrible mother that our 8 week old baby isn't sleeping thru or cries. I just don't know what to say or do to help her.

Paul, tell her from someone who knows, you should NEVER take it to heart. We followed ALL the rules (whatever they may be) and y'know, it doesn't always work every time. They are human beings after all with minds of their own. My son Luca, turned 4 on sunday and he still struggles to sleep before 9pm and stay asleep until 6:30 AM! in a year's time, you both won't even remember what the problem was!
Thanks for the comment. She has had a hard time with him not sleeping longer than he does and because of his erratic feeding. I just thing he will get better over time and we just need to do the best we can.
My daughter didn't sleep through the night for a very, very, long time. Their bellies are so small and they are growing so fast that they burn up the food they ate and they need to eat more before the end of 8 hours. Everyone once in a while I hear of a baby that sleeps a lot in the night, but it was the very small exception. My daughter had 16 teeth by the time she was 1 yr old. She cried a lot for a whole year. In retrospect it made a lot of sense to me that she'd be crying a lot. There is so much going on in their bodies I can't image how they wouldn't be crying a decent amount. It's sort of like being on a roller coaster 24/7. My husband would come home after work and I would be completely spent. I remember how very intense the first several years of being a mother were. Blessings on your way.
As a woman, it's hormones talking to her and through her. She just spent 9 months pregnant and gave birth. She is freaking tired. And the baby is going through the same thing. The best thing to do is listen. And not offer any "fixing" advice. You can't.
My ex, whoi is a single mother, used to sleep with the baby in the same bed. The baby would awake at night and take the milk and then fall into sleep again. It sort of makes sense with the small bellies..:)
Disclaimer: I don't know anything about babies and don't know why I even replied to this one!

Thanks for your comment. These first few weeks have been pretty intense and it isn't always easy to know what is bothering our little guy.
